Fun on the Lake

There’s nothing like a day (or two, or 10) on Cave Run Lake! Location is everything, and Cave Run Lake is conveniently located near I-64. It’s easy to pop on over to your favorite fishing spot or snag a pontoon or houseboat rental for the day. You’ll have more than 8,000 acres of open water and 200 miles of shoreline to explore at Cave Run Lake, the largest in northeastern Kentucky!

This is a fisherman’s paradise, where there’s a great catch waiting for you in Morehead – Musky Capital of the South. Anglers come from across the nation to fill their nets with these beasts, one of the freshwater’s largest fish.

But musky isn’t the only type of fish swimming here. More than 150 species of fish call the lake home, including popular bass and crappie varieties, such as largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, spotted bass, white bass, black crappie and white crappie. Chances are you’ll reel in something you’ll want to take home.

Twin Knobs and Clay Lick Boat-in Campground are both great options for camping and recreation around Cave Run Lake. Twin Knobs campground also has a beach area and plenty of picnic tables, so you can swim and take in the beauty of the lake.

The Morehead area boasts more than 100+ miles of multi-purpose trails to explore throughout Daniel Boone National Forest, along the shores of Cave Run Lake.

Plus, Morehead is an official Kentucky Trail Town! Whether you’re looking for a relaxing afternoon hike or you’re an experienced hiker wanting a challenge, there is a trail for you in Morehead.

The Cave Run Lake area has more than 40 trails, including the Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail. Enjoy hiking out at the lake or take the Sheltowee Trace to downtown Morehead, where you can stop for a cup of coffee at The Fuzzy Duck or grab a bite to eat at one of the locally owned restaurants along your way. After refueling, head out on another downtown trail, such as Fern Valley Trail or Eagle Lake Trail.
