For one weekend every year, Louisville is overrun with costumed characters from movies, TV shows, video games, comics and books. But it’s not Halloween; these people are here for Louisville, Kentucky’s Fandom Fest, a comic convention and expo. Though only a few years old, this annual event held at Kentucky International Convention Center drew nearly 10,000 people this year.

Fandom Fest is a pop-culture utopia, with everything from cosplay (short for “costume play”) to lectures and seminars; entertainment memorabilia and merchandise for sale. Attendees also get the chance to meet celebrity guests, authors and artists. Past celebrity guests have included William Shatner, Carrie Fisher, Stan Lee and Kevin Smith. Actors and actresses from shows such as The Walking Dead and Doctor Who have also attended. Photo and autograph opportunities with these stars are a huge draw for fans.

Beyond celebrity meet-and-greets, Fandom Fest offers a film festival, discussion panels, movie screenings, dances and more. Fandom Fest is actually a multi-genre group of conventions that includes an anime convention, film festival, horror convention and comic book show. The event even has a parade that allows attendees to show off their cosplay outfits or onlookers to enjoy the fun.

Fandom Fest’s founder and CEO, Ken Daniels, bills the event as both fan-friendly and cost-friendly. Children 12 and under are free and active military families get 50% off admission.

Fandom Fest will move to the Kentucky Exposition Center in 2016 while the Kentucky International Convention Center undergoes renovation. Get in touch with your geeky side and plan to attend the next Fandom Fest in Louisville!
