Eddyville is located near Lake Barkley. It was founded on the north bank of the Cumberland River and was named for the large eddies that swirled in the river. In the late 1950s the Army Corps of Engineers bought most of the land in Eddyville which lay in the floodplain of the planned Barkley Dam. By the time of the impoundment of Lake Barkley, Eddyville had relocated to its present location several miles north of the original site.
