Sandy Hook in Elliott County was established in the early 19th century and was named for its location on a bend in the Little Sandy River. In 1872 the town was renamed Martinsburg to honor state political figure John P. Martin. It was soon discovered that “Martin” was already being used by another Kentucky community, so the name was changed back. Sandy Hook is the hometown of country music singer Keith Whitley. A statue of Whitley playing his guitar can be seen in the local cemetery, and a local street was renamed "Keith Whitley Boulevard." Keith is buried in the Spring Hill Cemetery in Nashville, Tennessee.
