Centered around Covington's old German area, the MainStrasse Village is not only a historic district, but a community where people live and raise their families. It is also a collection of unique shops and restaurants set in a neighborhood of parks and Victorian and Classic Italianate homes of the mid- to late-1800s. Designated a national historic district, the City of Covington and the Northern Kentucky Convention and Visitor's Bureau initiated the development of the area in the late 1970s. Improvements, including the 100-foot Carroll Chimes Bell Tower, the Goose Girl Fountain and the Northern Kentucky Visitor's Center, became reality. The area is continuing to expand and has been improved and beautified with the addition of trees and walkways.
