The Frankfort staff for the Kentucky Department of Travel gathered for a holiday breakfast at the Frankfort Convention Center on Thursday. The menu was prepared by Commissioner Mike Cooper (upper right), Deputy Commissioner Shirley Dexter (second from left in front row), Liz Chewning and Chris Kellogg, division directors, and Cheryl Hatcher, chief marketing officer.

Dear Travel Industry Partners:

Let me wish you Happy Holidays and a prosperous New Year!

Actually, this is a time for the travel industry in Kentucky to be happy. Overall, we are weathering the economic storm pretty well. Here are some examples:

• One percent revenues for the past few months have been higher than projected.

• The Ryder Cup gave Kentucky phenomenal international exposure, as did our annual special events such as the Kentucky Derby and Rolex Three Day Event.

• Visits to our international website, www.visitkentuckyusa.com are at an all time high.

This year we made a strong push to encourage Kentuckians to” Discover Your Own Backyard,” and it seems to have helped, as evidenced by the one percent numbers. We targeted feeder markets and began a strong international push in advance of the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in 2010. We took advantage of our position as Lincoln’s birthplace allowed us to start the bicentennial celebration of his birth.

So far 2009 looks to be positive as well. We are working on new creative ideas to promote the state, as well as certain travel niches. We will intensify our push to draw the feeder market and international travel through our current programs, including an intensified public relations and marketing effort. We also plan to expand our push into the bourbon and adventure travel markets, both of which are exciting and profitable niches for the Kentucky travel industry.

As you know  the economy has been struggling and we are all doing more with less,  still I’m extremely optimistic about 2009. We have a tremendous team in place and incredible support from our travel partners throughout Kentucky.

I thank you for your help in making my first year as commissioner so rewarding. I hope you and your family enjoy the best holiday season of your lives.

Sincerely,

Mike Coopers Signature

Mike Cooper
Commissioner

The very successful Hoopfest will expand to Laurel County January 22-24, 2009.

8) Abraham Lincoln Boyhood Home at Knob Creek Chosen: The nine landmarks elected to be refurbished in 2009 by Hampton’s Save-A-Landmark Program have been chosen. The Lincoln Boyhood Home is the winner in Kentucky.
Hampton’s 2009 “All-American Landmarks” theme, pays homage to landmarks that celebrate the diverse definitions of what it means to be American. Each site that Save-A-Landmark will refurbish next year reflects the individual personalities of the states and their residents, and signifies defining moments in our country’s past and/or the influential people that ignited these actions.

From all of us at the Department of Travel, to all of you, have a safe and wonderful holiday season and a prosperous 2009.
