About an hour and one quarter (approximately 65 miles) from Lexington lies the north eastern part of Kentucky--a distinct geographic region of its own and home to Morehead State University.

Strike out east on I-64 towards Winchester/Morehead and see the natural beauty and the incredible folk art created by area artisans.

Cave Run LakeJust west of Morehead at Exit 133 is the Cave Run Lake area. Known for water sports, sailing and muskie fishing, biking and golf, this lake area provides breathtaking views of the Appalachian knobs. Don’t forget to order the t-shirt. www.caverunlake.com/

Several campgrounds are nestled on the shores of the lake.

The Pioneer Weapons Wildlife Management Area is a 7,600 acre tract where hunting is only permitted with muzzle-loading fire arms, bows or crossbows. So be at one with your inner Native American or early settler. The wild turkey and white-tailed deer, once eliminated from the area, have been re-established.

Clear Creek Iron Furnace is a relic of Kentucky's once flourishing iron industry. In the 1830's, Kentucky ranked third nationwide in pig iron production. Surrounding forests were logged to provide charcoal for the cut-stone furnace, producing iron to be used in railroad car wheels.

Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail allows you to trace Daniel Boone’s footsteps. This 269 mile trail was named in honor of Daniel Boone who explored the land where it passes. It traverses the full length of the Daniel Boone National Forest.

Meander along Zilpo National Scenic Byway, a gently curving ridge top route with scenic views of forested hills and Cave Run Lake.
