GENERAL DESCRIPTION

This National Wildlife Refuge is enjoyed by sportsman and adventure seekers year round. The Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge comprises 22 islands, covering 3,300 acres over 400 miles of the Ohio River. Most islands are in West Virginia, but two are located in Kentucky. All islands but one are accessible by boat only. They provide habitat for a variety of animal and waterfowl species, as well as native plants and grasses. The islands are open to hunting and fishing with special regulations, and some have short nature trails where one can experience the wildlife variety up close.
