The only National Wildlife Refuge located entirely within the state of Kentucky, the Clarks River National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1997. It is now over 8,000 acres in total size, with land purchasing still happening to reach a goal of 18,000 acres. The land is mostly bottom hardwoods and wetlands. This provides great habitat for a number of animals, birds and plants. Forty miles of the Clark River cut through the refuge, which lies in Marshall and McCracken counties. The refuge is open to both hunting and fishing, but special regulations apply for both. There is a half-mile rail trail located on the refuge near the town on Benton. Before heading out to hunt, fish, photograph or explore, be sure to stop by the refuge's headquarters and pick up the necesary permits or information.
