The Shakers were Kentucky’s premier agriculturalists, and the finest and most inventive farmers of their day. Season after season, for more than 100 years, the Shakers planted, tended and harvested hundreds of acres of well-designed gardens and orchards that supplied the community with the best possible produce.

Long before today’s trendy farm to fork movement, the Shaker community at Pleasant Hill spent their days tending 5,000 acres of vegetables, fruits, herbs, grains and livestock, and preparing wholesome simple feats that fed more than 500 community members every day.

Stop by the farm to see how we are using organic practices to continue the Shaker tradition of growing abundant, fresh produce for Shaker Village guests. Learn how they managed their 5,000-acre farm.

Take a walk with our gardener, and learn what’s growing in our two-acre garden. Eight varieties of tomatoes, okra, cabbage, broccoli, purple cauliflower, Bull’s Eye beets, Irish potatoes (red, white and blue), white honey dew, peas… all destined to end up on your plate in the Trustees’ Office Dining Room.
