Franklin, the county seat of Simpson County is centered around a beautiful square composed of a stately Italianate courthouse built in 1882 and a shady, manicured courtyard. Franklin's square consists of colorful storefronts with skirted awnings, brick sidewalks, leafy ferns, and interesting shops. Friendly faces welcome you to clothing stores, restaurants, jewelry store, an art gallery, a children's shop and more. Located a short distance from I-65, Franklin's charm will entice you to linger in our peaceful downtown, take a walk around the square, visit the church where Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash were married, take a tour of the Old Jail and Jailer's Quarters and see graffiti drawn by Civil War soldiers awaiting trial, sit on a bench and watch the world go by.
In addition to the courthouse, Old Stone Jail, and Franklin Presbyterian Church several other buildings around the square were built prior to 1900.
