Mammoth Cave National Park is one of the oldest tourist attractions in the United States, second only to Niagara Falls, NY.  The park was established to preserve and protect the scenic Nolin and Green River valleys, hilly country typical of southcentral Kentucky, and the extensive caves, including Mammoth, the longest known cave system in the world.  Mammoth Cave is more than 400 miles long, a portion of which may be seen on guided tours led by National Park Service rangers.  The park is really two national parks -- one above ground and one below.  The solitude and beauty of the park's eighty square miles of rugged karst country, thirty-one miles of riverways, and ninety miles of trails offer countless opportunities for backpacking, hiking, horseback riding, biking,  fishing, canoeing and nature exploration, in addition to the lure of the cave.
