In this house on Christmas Day 1809, the first successful abdominal surgery in the world was performed. Dr. Ephraim McDowell removed a tumor, without anesthetic, from Jane Todd Crawford who had ridden over 50 miles on horseback to have the surgery. This surgery paved the way for modern abdominal surgery. The museum is the doctor's home and apothecary, furnished as it would have been in the early 1790's to 1830's. Hours: Monday-Saturday 10am-noon; 1-4pm, Sunday 2-4pm. Closed major holidays and Mondays from November 1st to March 1st. Eastern Standard Time.
