The Shakers were a communal religious organization that flourished in America during the 19th century. The Shaker Museum, found in the 40-room 1824 Centre House, is filled with scores of original artifacts exemplifying the Shakers' fine craftmanship. The architecture of the Centre House is pure Shaker; its double room doors and staircases illustrate the Shaker practice of separating the sexes. South Union was one of 24 villages established by the Shakers. While visiting the Shaker Museum, enjoy a stay at the Shaker Tavern Bed & Breakfast. The Shaker Tavern is also available for group meals and other gatherings by reservation. The Museum Shop offers a large collection of Shaker books and reproductions. Reduced winter hours: December 1 - February 28 Open 10am - 4pm. Closed Sunday and Monday. Holiday Closings: Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve & Day, New Year's Eve & Day.
