The Baker – Bird Winery (R) is one of 22 wineries on the National Historic Registry out of about 6000 wineries in the U.S.A. The Winery is the oldest commercial estate winery in America with its original land. It was built by German immigrants that came from Baden (one of the great wine producing regions of Germany.) The German immigrants settled the Ohio River Valley around Augusta and produced fine wines of the America’s Rhineland(R) in the mid 1800s. The Winery provided safety to citizens during a Civil War battle and witnessed a new era of freedom for all in Americans with the Underground Railroad Trail at the doors of the Winery. Wine tasting, historic tours of the winery and educational vineyard, Kentucky made cheeses with homemade breads are available and party facilites can be rented. Delux Bed & Breakfast, Hawk Wood Hall is nearby.Location: Augusta, KY at the corner of Rt 19 and 8, which is about 2 miles from AA (Rt 9) highway.
