Southern Lights is a greatly anticipated holiday tradition for families all across Kentucky, in support of the programs, activities and facilities of the Kentucky Horse Park.

An enhanced dreamland of dazzling lighted and often animated figures followed by a walk into the park to see a multitude of holiday happenings including seasonal entertainment, a petting zoo, pony rides, camel rides, model trains, holiday and craft vendors, refreshments, the Mini-Train Express and added exhibits or attractions will add to the holiday excitement throughout the event.  The lights on the driving route are on each night through December 31, and the other holiday attractions will be open each night, with the exception of November 26 (Thanksgiving) and December 24 to 31.

The American Bus Association (ABA) selected Southern Lights a Top 100 event for 2013 and 2014, which is an annual compendium of the best events for group travel in the United States and Canada.  Winners are chosen from hundreds of celebrations, festivals, fairs, and commemorative events that have been nominated by ABA members.  In addition, Southern Lights has been annually selected as a winner of the Southeast Tourism Society’s Top 20 Events and the Kentucky Travel Industry Association’s Top 10 Events.

Far from being a normal festival, the Woolly Worm Festival became a tradition rooted in Lee County’s culture. The woolly worm is believed to forecast the weather for the coming winter season. A woolly worm’s body has 13 segments-each corresponding to a week in winter. If a segment is light brown, that means the week will be mild. If a segment is black, that means a harsh, cold week. The worm acted as a weather predictor for many old time farmers who would harvest crop and cut firewood in preparation for the upcoming winter.

Festival food, Woolly Worm Races, Live Entertainment on two stages, Inflatables for the kids, and over 100 booths up and down both sides of Main Street, Beattyville, KY

Each fall, Forkland celebrates its rural past with a wonderful fall festival of crafts, music, food, games and historical displays. Festival goers can purchase local crafts and watch them being made, visit a log cabin, the Lincoln Museum and even an old steam tractor. You can experience a horse drawn wagon ride to a lovely waterfall, listen to history skits and Old Time music and take a chance on an Amish made quilt at the silent auction.

Come and run through the scenic Knobs on Forkland’s backroads in the Fox and Hound Race. Play old-fashioned kids’s games like marbles, hopscotch, paper dolls, yoyos and more. You definitely don’t want to miss all the delicious food!
