Region Eastern Kentucky

Originally known as Wells Mill, West Liberty is thought to have been first settled by Baptist preacher, Daniel Williams, in 1805. One of the most interesting aspects of West Liberty lies in its very name. Not actually west of Liberty, Kentucky, its name was initially intended to be a counterpart name to the seat of Pike County (originally to be a town named Liberty, but would later became Pikeville). Adding to the area’s rich history is the fact that three skirmishes of the Civil War were fought on West Liberty’s soil. Today, the town is lively but peaceful. The Bluegrass Festival and the Morgan County Sorghum Festival are among the many events enjoyed in the town from year to year. Stop by West Liberty anytime for good times and peaceful living.
