The Santa Train will be in Shelbiana Sat. Nov. 23, 2019 with gifts for the little ones.  Train will be at Shelbiana at 6 am Sat. Nov. 23, then on to Marrowbone around 6:30, then to Elkhorn City around 7 am.  Nestled in the shadows of Pine Mountain in far eastern Pike County, Elkhorn City has been quietly making a name for itself as a hotbed for adventure activity.  With some of the best outdoor destinations in the Commonwealth, its no wonder why paddlers, hikers, horseback riders, ATV riders and campers have been making Elkhorn City a favorite destination.  The Russell Fork River is one of, if not the best destination for whitewater in all of Kentucky.  Every weekend in October, as part of scheduled draw downs from the upstream Flannagan Reservoir, the paddling reaches its peak.  For your guided rafting needs, use local outfitter Kentucky Whitewater.  Combined with the scenery only found in the "Grand Canyon of the South" and the usual great weather, and Elkhorn City turns into a paddler's paradise.  Its not just river runners that will find something in Elkhorn City, but trail lovers will find the 120 mile Pine Mountain State Scenic Trail breathtaking and challenging.  Stretching along the southeastern border of Kentucky from the Breaks Interstate Park to Cumberland Gap National Historic Park, the Pine Mountain Trail is one of the premier trail systems in Kentucky.  The US76 TransAmerican Bike Route also travels through Elkhorn City, making it a perfect rest stop as cyclists travel from coast to coast across the county.  The Breaks Interstate Park is one of only two interstate parks in the nation.  Straddling the border of Kentucky and Virginia, visitors will find an extensive trail system, access to the Russell Fork, a ten mile mountain bike trail system, and numerous opportunities for camping and lodging.  Anglers will find good fishing in the park at Laurel Lake, as well as several productive fishing locations in the Russell Fork.  Local eateries like Time Out Pizza and entertainment venues like the Artist Collaborative Theater make a visit to Elkhorn City fun for the whole family. If you're looking for an outdoor adventure that's truly unique, Elkhorn City must be on your list of destinations.
