High Rock Loop is known as one of the best trails in Kentucky and offers even the most experienced hikers a challenging climb through the Bad Branch Preserve.
This extremely strenuous 7.5-mile hike has a lot of uphill elevation changes and is located nearly 2 miles north of Bad Branch Falls.
Near the top of the trail, hikers will need to climb up steep areas with rock outcrop. High Rock’s steep ridge of sandstone gives all who pursue its beauty an unparalleled 180-degree view: with the city of Whitesburg in the valley, the Cumberland Plateau on the horizon and Virginia’s coalfields beyond the tree line to the south.
High Rock is the second highest point on the Highland section of the Pine Mountain Trail and is part of the Appalachian Mountains, which are the oldest mountains in the world.
