Mount Vernon

Mt. Vernon is nestled in the foothills of the Cumberland Mountains and conveniently located off I-75 at exits 59 & 62, just 45 miles south of Lexington.  It is the perfect spot to relax, forget your troubles and  experience small town charm and hospitality. Mt. Vernon has been home to Renfro Valley, "Kentucky's Country Music Capital" since 1939 and continues to be one of Kentucky's premier tourist destinations. Mt. Vernon is proud of its rich musical heritage and was honored to be chosen as the site for the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame and Museum which was built in 2002.  This state-of-the-art facility honors Kentuckians from all genres of music that have made amazing contributions to the music industry.

While music is our number one tourist attraction, there's much more to see and do while in the area. You won't want to miss stopping by the BitterSweet Cabin Village and learn about Appalachian life in Kentucky, or shop in one of our many unique shopping venues. Outdoor adventure is always on hand with ATV and off road vehicle trails, or spend a more relaxing day boating on Lake Linville, canoeing on the Rockcastle River or horseback riding through the scenic countryside. 

Mt. Vernon is located in Rockcastle County and is the county seat.  The area was first settled in 1790 around a feature called Spout Springs. Much of the area was originally swampland. The settlement was named for George Washington's home, Mt. Vernon. The Wilderness Road was routed through in 1792, and was the principal settlement when Rockcastle County was created in 1810.
