Trail Blazing

Get off the beaten path with Kentucky backpacking, bike, horse and OHV trails

Trails in Kentucky come in all shapes and sizes.  As pioneers and settlers traveled westward, many traveled to and through Kentucky.  Places like the Cumberland Gap and the Wilderness Road were vital to American expansion.  Now, those historically significant  trails have evolved into a trail system that totals over 12,000 miles. Kentucky backpacking and hiking enthusiasts have seemingly endless opportunities for adventure.

State and National Parks and recreation areas all cater to the self-powered traveler. The Sheltowee Trace stretches through the Daniel Boone National Forest for over 260 miles, providing prime Kentucky backpacking and day hiking trips. The Pine Mountain Trail lays across the top of Pine Mountain for 120 miles, and is part of the Great Eastern Trail that will stretch over 1,800 miles and 9 states.  Areas such as Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area and the Big South Fork National Recreation Area have also earned reputations as having some of the top trails for Kentucky backpacking and hiking.

Kentucky is the Horse Capital of the World, which means some fabulous trail riding for equine enthusiasts. Horse camps across the commonwealth connect horses and riders into some the best trail systems around. Kentucky horse trail riding is a great way to experience the nature of the Bluegrass State up-close.

Those looking to pedal their way around have plenty of options in Kentucky as well. Mountain bikers will find great single track rides, and road cyclists are sure to enjoy one of the dozen popular paved routes. Southeastern Kentucky is growing into one of the top destinations for ATV and off road vehicles in the country. Thousands of miles of ATV and OHV trails have been developed on reclaimed mine lands and wooded forests. The views from atop these popular ATV and OHV trails and parks are sure to make you come back to ride again and again.
