Princeton was on the overland route taken by a majority of the Cherokees on the Trail of Tears - the route taken by over 16,000 Cherokee people who were forcibly removed from their Appalachian and southeastern United States homelands and sent to Indian Territory (Oklahoma). Ten of the contingents of the Cherokee Nation passed through Princeton in November and December of 1838.
