Located in Johnson and Morgan counties, the 1,139 acre lake was impounded from Paint Creek by the Corps of Engineers in 1983.

Beautiful Paintsville Lake with its steep, rocky cliffs and wooded coves, provides boating, skiing, and fishing pleasure. The lake area contains 32 developed campsites, ten primitive campsites, a playground, four picnic shelters, four-lane launch ramp, amphitheater, restaurant, marina, and Kiwanis Trail.

Fish from pontoon boats, fishing boats, paddleboats, houseboats and the shoreline at Paintsville Lake. Largemouth bass, trout, smallmouth bass, channel catfish, walleye and redbreast sunfish have been stocked in the lake. Paint Creek below the dam is stocked monthly from April through November with rainbow trout. The lake itself is stocked annually with rainbow trout.
