Morehead’s Cave Run Lake: A Fisherman’s Paradise

Anglers from across the nation come to Cave Run Lake in Morehead, Kentucky, known as the “Muskie Capital of the South.”
Fishermen here know the thrill of filling their nets with trophy muskie, one of the largest freshwater fish. In fact, the Kentucky state record muskie was caught at Cave Run Lake in 2008, weighing in at 47 pounds and measuring 54 inches. Muskie season traditionally starts in March, when the fish begin to spawn, and continues through fall.
Cave Run Lake is also perfect for anglers looking for variety in their catch, as muskie aren’t the only fish swimming in this lake. More than 150 different species have been found here, including largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, spotted bass, white bass, black crappie, white crappie, bluegill and catfish.
Whether you are casting from the shoreline or renting a boat for the day, chances are you’ll reel in some brag-worthy keepers. Cave Run Lake also offers easy access with 12 boat ramps, two full-service marinas and a variety of boat rental options.
Get Schooled at a Fish Hatchery
The Minor E. Clark Fish Hatchery is one of the largest freshwater fish hatcheries in the nation, making it a must-see for anglers visiting the Cave Run Lake area. There are more than 100 ponds located at the hatchery, and a variety of warm water game fish are raised here.
