Kentucky Lakes: The Frontier of Fishing

Kentucky’s reputation as a premier destination for outdoor recreation continues to grow, and this summer the Commonwealth has made history on one of its most iconic waterways.

From June 24–27, 2026, Lake Cumberland hosted the 17th Annual High School Fishing World Finals and National Championship for the first time ever. Nearly 500 elite student anglers, accompanied by coaches, families, support teams, and thousands of spectators, traveled from across the United States to compete in one of the Nation’s fastest growing sports.  

The championship was a major success for Lake Cumberland, attracting thousands of visitors to the region and shining a spotlight on local hotels, restaurants, marinas, and shops. Hosting this nationally recognized event showcased Lake Cumberland as an ideal destination for fishing, outdoor recreation, and future sporting events, strengthening its reputation as one of the country's top outdoor tourism destinations.
