How to Spend a Summer Day in Morehead

After your morning pick-me-up, travel to Twin Knobs Beach, a scenic lakeside destination along the shores of Cave Run Lake. With its soft sand and relaxing atmosphere, it’s the perfect place to unwind, stretch out in the sun, or take a refreshing swim. The area is also a favorite among anglers, as Cave Run Lake is known for its excellent fishing opportunities. Often called the “Muskie Capital of the South,” the lake is home to trophy muskie, as well as largemouth and smallmouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and catfish. Whether you’re casting from shore near the beach or launching a boat from the nearby Twin Knobs ramp, there’s always a chance of reeling in something memorable.  

For lunch, head to Elliotts Pizzeria , conveniently located near Cave Run Lake. A local favorite, this spot offers something for everyone, with a menu featuring specialty pizzas, pasta dishes, and hearty subs. I highly recommend the Spillway BBQ Pizza, topped with tender grilled chicken and finished with a rich, flavorful barbecue drizzle. Guests can also enjoy live music and outdoor seating, creating a relaxed atmosphere perfect for unwinding after an afternoon at the lake. 

Next, step back in time with a visit to the Morehead History & Railroad Museum , where local history comes to life through railroad artifacts, model train displays, and more. The museum showcases memorabilia from the six historic railroads that once ran through Rowan County, along with detailed model train displays and working layouts that delight visitors of all ages. Beyond railroad history, guests can explore exhibits featuring the Rowan County Feud, Native American artifacts, and even a six-foot model of the famous steamboat Belle of Louisville. Best of all, admission is free.  

End your day with a drink at Sawstone Brewing Co. , the only brewery in Morehead. Specializing in pre-Prohibition ales and lagers, Sawstone offers plenty of variety and flavor across its taps. The brewery also features outdoor seating, weekly trivia nights, and live jazz performances perfect for a summer night.
