Ale-8-One Celebrates 100 Years

For 100 years, Ale-8-One has been a Kentucky staple. From its hometown of Winchester, the iconic soft drink has become a beloved part of the Commonwealth's culture, recognized for its signature green glass bottle and its century-long legacy as a Kentucky favorite.  

The story of Ale-8-One began with founder G.L. Wainscott, who developed the secret family recipe for the soft drink in 1926. Still family owned and bottled in Winchester, it is the oldest privately held soft drink bottler in the United States owned by the founding family. Known for its crisp, lightly carbonated flavor with hints of real ginger and citrus, Ale-8-One has expanded beyond its original recipe to include flavors such as Cherry, Orange Cream, Peach, Blackberry, and a variety of seasonal favorites.  

A visit to Winchester offers the opportunity to experience Ale-8-One where it all began. The Ale-8-One bottling facility welcomes visitors with free guided tours that share the company's history, explain how the signature soft drink is made and bottled, and highlight the practices that have helped the brand remain a Kentucky favorite for generations. Guests can also browse exclusive merchandise and souvenirs, purchase Ale-8-One products, and enjoy the nostalgic atmosphere that celebrates a century of family tradition.  

As part of its centennial celebration, Ale-8-One is hosting special events throughout the year to honor its rich history and the community that has supported the brand for generations. One of the biggest highlights is Ale-8-One Day, held on Aug. 1 in downtown Winchester. The celebration will feature live music, food trucks, family-friendly activities, a historical marker unveiling recognizing the company's legacy, and local favorites like Ale-8-One ice cream floats. Additionally, visitors will have the chance to experience Winchester's welcoming community while celebrating one of Kentucky's most iconic brands. 

Beyond the bottling company, Winchester offers plenty to explore. Visitors can stroll through the historic downtown district, browse locally owned shops like Betsey's Boutique or Eve’s Uniques , and learn about Winchester’s connections to Kentucky’s past. Nearby attractions include Fort Boonesborough State Park and Hall's on the River, a historic riverside restaurant with ties dating back to the 18th century.
