Embark on a culinary journey through Kentucky, where every turn will delight and surprise you. From the birthplace of bourbon to hidden gems with Brazilian coffee, this state is a food and drink lover’s dream. Join me and my fiancé on our recent road trip through Covington, Maysville, Ashland, Lexington, Red River Gorge, and Berea. In each place, we discovered each city’s culinary gems and pockets of unique charm. 

 

 

Day 1 in Covington

Our culinary adventure kicked off in Covington, located at the cusp of Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati, Ohio. From the waterfront views of the Ohio River to the historic Mainstrasse Village, Covington is filled with unique quirks, art, and diverse architecture that intertwines a mix of old and new. The landscape of the city also lends itself to a thriving food and drink scene — from devoted farm-to-table restaurants to iconic diners anchored in the community.

Day 2 in Maysville

About an hour south of Covington, we drove to the steepled skyline city of Maysville. This is dubbed as the best small southern town in America, with a historic downtown and scenic riverfront on the banks of the Ohio River. Previously known as a significant way station for both bourbon and buffalo, Maysville is the definition of charming — loved by its citizens and truly is a must-visit.

Day 3 in Ashland

 

As we traveled to the eastern side of the state that borders West Virginia, we made it to Ashland. Underrated and up-and-coming, Ashland is a hidden gem waiting to be explored. We were pleasantly surprised by the town's impressive food and drink scene.

Day 4 in Berea & Red River Gorge 

 

As a thriving college town, Berea offers a unique blend of history and culture. Local artisans and their varying art forms are front and center. About an hour’s drive away, Red River Gorge offers inspiration for this art with its natural beauty. Located in the Daniel Boone National Forest, this stunning area is home to hiking trails, rock climbing opportunities, and breathtaking views.

Day 5 in Lexington

Our final stop was in the heart of the Bluegrass region. Lexington is a vibrant and thriving community that feels like a “big small town”. There is so much to do within the pockets of this city. While known as the horse capital of the world with famous tracks like Keeneland, Lexington should also be seen past its equestrian roots as an amazing culinary destination.
