Harlan County's Tri-Cities are officially Kentucky Trail Towns.  These three historic mining communities provide access to some of the best recreational offerings in Kentucky.  Visitors may access the Pine Mountain State Scenic Trail, or head up to Kingdom Come State Park and the Little Shepherd Trail.  The local Looney Creek Trail System connects each community, and the recently developed Summit Bike Trail takes cyclists to the top of Kentucky's highest point, Black Mountain.  Nestled between two of Kentucky's most prominent mountain chains, Cumberland, Benham and Lynch have a rich history and culture to share with visitors.  If you're interested in touring an underground coal mine, then make sure to visit Portal 31 Mine Tours.  After the tour head over to Lamp House Coffee for some great local coffee and food.  The School House Inn and and Kentucky Coal Museum are also popular stops for those interested in the history of the region.  When you get hungry be sure to stop by Charlotte's Hoagie Shop, where you can find so much more than just hoagies.  More than anything, enjoy the great outdoors and the great people around these historic mountain communities.
